Fluoride Guidelines by Age

Fluoride is the single most effective defense against decay. Use the appropriate amount:

  • πŸ‘‰ Under 2 Years: A microscopic smear (grain of rice) of low-fluoride toothpaste.
  • πŸ‘‰ 2 to 6 Years: A small pea-sized amount of 1000–1450ppm fluoride toothpaste.
  • πŸ‘‰ 6+ Years & Teens: Standard pea-sized dab of 1450ppm family fluoride toothpaste.

Technique: Spit, Don't Rinse!

Brush twice daily for a full 2 minutesβ€”once in the morning and always right before bed. After brushing, teach children to spit out the excess toothpaste but DO NOT rinse with water! Leaving a thin film of fluoride on the teeth provides hours of continuous enamel defense.

Parental Supervision is Key

Young children lack the fine motor skills to clean all tooth surfaces properly until approximately age 7–8 (when they can tie their own shoelaces cleanly). Always supervise or perform the final brush yourself.
